  • CIArb Young Members Group Essay Competition

    The CIArb usually hosts essay competitions several times a year, with competitions either being hosted by regional branches (the UK, Australia, Vietnam, the US, etc) or ‘globally’, i.e., by the overarching organisation.

  • Young ITA Writing Competition and Award

    This yearly competition invites participants to submit papers of between 3,500 and 25,000 words, addressing issues related to any topic in the field of international commercial or investment arbitration. The 2021 deadline has now passed, with the 2022 deadline likely being early in 2022.

  • Young Singapore International Arbitration Centre Competition

    YSIAC hosts a yearly writing competition, the format of which frequently differs. In 2020, it concerned writing a legal memorandum on specific issues; in 2021 it invited participants to debate a motion. The next deadline is in September 2022.

  • Gary B Born Essay Competition on International Arbitration

    This yearly essay competition is hosted by NLU Jodhpur in India and open to participants from around the globe. Competitors are usually invited to write on a specified list of topics. The deadline for 2022 will likely fall in October.

  • European Investment Law and Arbitration Review Essay Competition

    This yearly competition is aimed at young practitioners and scholars, whom it invites to submit between 5,000 and 12,000 words on any topic ​related to EU investment law and arbitration. The next deadline will be in the spring of 2022.

  • James B. Boskey Law Student Essay Contest on Dispute Resolution

    In this competition, US law students are invited to address any aspect of dispute resolution practice, theory, or research that the contestant chooses. The 2021 deadline has passed, with the 2022 deadline likely being in June.

  • Nappert Prize in International Arbitration

    Hosted by McGill University in Montreal, the Nappert prize is named after Sophie Nappert, a noted arbitrator based in London. The competition invites participants to submit unpublished papers on commercial arbitration or investment arbitration. The next competition will take place in 2022.

  • The Gillis Wetter Memorial Prize (LCIA)

    Named after Dr Gillis Wetter, an acclaimed and beloved arbitrator and author of many highly regarded texts on international arbitration, this competition is held biannually by the LCIA. The next deadline will likely be in the spring of 2022.

  • BAC Essay Competition on Commercial Arbitration

    This yearly competition is oriented toward students majored in law from colleges in both China and abroad. Authors are expected to write and submit 5,000-15,000 word essays focusing on substantive or procedural issues related to commercial arbitration, investment arbitration or other diversified alternative dispute resolution. The deadline is usually in July.

  • ACICA Essay Competition

    First launched in 2020, participants are invited to address a specified topic without character limitations. The deadline for 2021 has now closed, and the 2022 deadline will likely be around July. Entries to the competition are invited and encouraged from students based in Australia who are studying a law degree, and lawyers based in Australia in their first five years of practice.

  • UNIDROIT Essay Competition

    UNIDROIT launched its Essay Competition in 2021, inviting participants to author an essay in English between 2000-3000 words on a matter related to UNIDROIT principles. It is unclear whether the competition is taking place in 2022, but we shall keep our readers updated.

  • Arbitrator Intelligence Essay Competition

    The first essay competition was held in 2020, with no competition being held in 2021. It is unclear as of yet whether this is a biannual competition or whether this was simply a one-off event. We shall keep our readers updated for 2022.
